DEFINITION
A silt fence is a temporary sediment
barrier made of woven, synthetic filtration fabric supported by either wood or
steel posts.
PURPOSE
The purpose of silt fence is to prevent the flow of
sediment from leaving the desired site and entering natural drainage ways or
storm drainage systems by slowing storm water runoff and causing the deposition
of sediment at the structure. Silt
fencing encourages sheet flow and reduces the potential of developing ruts and
gullies.
CONDITIONS
Silt fence should be installed where
sheet flow runoff can be stored behind the barrier without damaging the barrier
or the submerged area behind the barrier.
CONSTRUCTION
A silt fence should be constructed on
slopes greater than 7%, with the fence being impounded to a depth of at least
12 inches or more. Steel or wooden posts shoud be driven in to the ground to a
depth of at least 16 inches and placed
no further apart than 8 feet.
